Speaking at #OUGN2014: “Source Control – not only for developers”

OUGN14_Speaking_200pxHope to see you at my presentation in April. Want to attend? http://www.ougn.no/ougn-vrseminar-2014

My presentation “Source Control – not only for developers” just got admitted to the 2014 conference program in April. This time I’ll actually give a quite new presentation. Usually I talk about performance, and recently I’ve given quite a few presentations about Oracle End-to-End Metrics. I do enjoy talking about performance issues, but now I’m looking forward to talk about Source Control for database changes.

The last years I’ve been working with different Java development teams. It has been very interesting to see how the attitude towards me as an Oracle resource has gradually changed. From being just another DBA (or actually just a DBA) to a valuable member of the development team. Working close with our Java developers have actually thought me a lot of new things valuable in my database world. Developers have for many years used version (or source) control systems. This has actually not been the case in the database world.

Taking care of several database systems, how do you know what state or version your different database are running. What have you actually been testing? What version is running in your production system? How do you get from version A to version B? Without a careful plan and ways to handle these issues things could easily go wrong. There are many products in the market to day that help you solve these issues. What you should choose is a matter of choice and needs. Different products have different characteristics. The most important thing is that you actually do something, and generate a strategy for your source and version control.

In my presentation I will demonstrate two very different alternatives on the marked – FlywayDB and RedGate Source Control for Oracle.
